Massage therapy is a growing healthcare practice. Career colleges are promoting themselves as colleges granting diplomas in massage therapy in print, radio and television. Their message is basically one appealing to people who sit on the couch during daytime television, promising people who graduate their college of being able to be their own boss, make lots of money, set their own hours and interact with physicians. This huge undertaking is capturing the attention and kindling the hopes of a large number of people. This education is costing students up to $15,000 - $20,000 for six to nine months of study.
I've been in practice as a massage therapist for six years. The last two years I have been interviewing graduates of these career colleges - and presenting them fundamental entrance exams. More than ninety percent of the graduates fail a simple muscle and bone identification test. Many of these students will never gain meaningful and lasting employment as a massage therapist. Wouldn't it be nice if students could get a solid, realistic glimpse of the field of massage therapy before they commit their time and financial resources?
I am committed to make a contribution to the students and the massage industry by starting a unique service. I am offering people seeking to become a massage therapist a rapid paced survey consultation on massage therapy. This introductory consultation sessions will be three hours a day for four days a week - for one month. Session topics will touch on anatomy, physiology, pathology as well as business models, ethics and legal isues, and an array of opportunities that credentials in massage can bring. The group will be intentionally small, no more than six students. The duration of the sessions will be short - only one month. The impact of the month long endeavor however will aid those people with a real passion for helping others - as well as helping those who may find themselves unfulfilled after having completed the consultation. The career colleges will receive better, more informed students. The students who then graduate will likely be more successful in the field of massage therapy.
The course is available for a minimal registration fee of six hundred dollars - the cost of a weekend seminar for a credentialed therapist. The registration fee also includes an outstanding text book, Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage, fourth edition. Mark F. Beck has written an outstanding authoritative textbook of 967 pages and is complete with charts, photographs and tables. His text, published by Thomson Delmar Learning is on the list of preferred texts for the preparation of the NCBTMB (National Board) exam. Optimal Health Enterprises LLC is quite a value to individuals who indicate interest in massage therapy as a career or job path.
